Philanthropy

Union Hand in Hand

Did you know heart disease kills more women than all cancers combined?

One of the most important aspects to being a member of Alpha Phi is having the opportunity to give back to the community. As a chapter, we place a strong emphasis on philanthropy & service. Whether it is hosting our own philanthropy events such as Red Dress Gala, or volunteering at a local women's shelter, we always strive our hardest to give back to the community, as well as support a variety of important causes.

Each year, the Iota Theta Chapter hosts four philanthropy events - Red Dress Gala, Heart Throb, Move Your Phi't and Heart Week. All of the proceeds from these events benefit the Alpha Phi Foundation, and to support local heart health organizations such as St. Mary's Hospital in Kitchener, Waterloo.

Aside from the four main philanthropy events, we hold each year, the sisters of the Iota Theta Chapter also volunteer their time within the Waterloo community. Sisters have visited Mary's Place, an emergency shelter that provides safety for families, women, and transgendered persons. To learn more about Mary's Place, please click here. We have also volunteered at Monica Place, which provides residence, counselling, and school programs for pregnant and parenting youth. To learn more about Monica Place, please click here. Most recently, we have established a relationship with the Waterloo Food Bank and sent dozens of sisters to volunteer numerous times throughout the year.

Red Dress Gala

Silent Auction & Dinner

Iota Theta's annual Red Dress Gala is our biggest Philanthropy event of the year that raises money for women's heart health. Families, friends, and alumnae are invited to spend an elegant evening dining, laughing, and supporting a great cause held at a banquet hall in the Waterloo area. Throughout the evening there are guest speakers, a silent auction, as well as a 50/50 draw that includes prizes such as game tickets, winery tours, etc. Thank you to our dedicated members as of 2019 Red Dress Gala has raised over $100,000 for the Alpha Phi Foundation in support of women's heart health.

Heartthrob

Inter-sorority dance-off and raffle draw

This event includes an inter-sorority dance competition between Laurier's sororities. As well as Mr. Heart Throb, a pageant among the representatives from Laurier's fraternities. Our annual Heart Throb fundraiser is a public event to raise money for the Alpha Phi Foundation in support of women's heart health. Raising $1,500 in the winter of 2018. There are raffle prizes to be won, including game tickets, sports apparel, spa baskets, and more!

Heart Week

Cardiac Care and Awareness

February is heart health awareness month, in 2014 our chapter introduced heart week in support of creating awareness for heart health. Throughout the week in February, our sisters strive to increase awareness about heart disease and women's heart health around the Wilfrid Laurier campus and within our sorority. The week consists of fitness classes, Mac and Phis, bake sales, and many more exciting things.
